Skil 5301 vs Bosch GKS 7000

Skil 5301 vs Bosch GKS 7000
Cutting small pieces with circular saw is always challenging. What I always wanted was to buy a table saw but as all the table saws available in market are very expensive  I decided to make my own table saw. As I already own a Skil saw I thought of converting it into a table saw as it has enough power 1300W and a decent blade size of 184mm but I wanted a spare circular saw as cutting full sheets of plywood on table saw will be difficult in my small apartment so I bought Bosch GSK 7000.
I could have bought another Skil 5301 as its a good saw but I wanted some variety in tool collection.
Bought Bosch GKS online for 5600Rs from amazon.in and was very happy with the deal till I saw it selling for 4900Rs in another store. Had bought the Skil saw one year back for around 3600Rs from SJP Road Bangalore.
Before starting with the table saw project wanted to do a side by side comparison with both the table saws.

Specifications

Power 1100W 1300W
RPM 5200rpm 5500rpm
Max Cutting Depth 90° 68mm (65mm with 184mm Blade) 64mm
Max Cutting Depth 45° 50mm (47mm with 184mm Blade) 48mm
Blade Size 184-190 mm 184 mm (Clearance to  take 190mm)
Cord Length 2 Meter 2.37 Meter
Weight 3.8 Kg 4.4 Kg
Clearly from the specification you can see Skil is more powerful saw but at the same time it is more heavy. On box and on the Bosch site its mentioned that GKS 7000 is 3.6Kg but on weighing the saw I found its 3.8 Kg. The reason I chose the Bosch GKS 7000 over the GKS 190 was the weight, I feel 1100W is more than enough for cutting the panels. Also its a bit quieter than the Skil saw.
Skil 5301 vs Bosch GKS 7000
Although the  Bosch is more expensive then Skil saw yet it does not come with all the accessories as you can see from the above image the Skil has an additional handle so you can use both hands during the long cut. The handle for the Bosch has to be purchased separately, but I doubt whether its available locally or online. Similarly the Bosch can be connected to Dust Extractor but again the adapter is not included. There is a same model which is sold abroad which contains all the accessories but in India its not available.

Base plate of Bosch GKS 7000 is wider than the Skil 5301 14cm vs 15cm. Base plate of both the saws is made from stamped sheet of metal,  Bosch base plate is thicker then the Skil but both the bases are sturdy. The guard on the Bosch is made from plastic and flees flimsy on Skil its made of metal and it feels very sturdy. On keeping the Saw down part of the weight of saw is borne by the saw guard and having a metal guard gives the confidence that the saw can take some rough handling.

Blade Comparison

The stock saw blades in both the saws are similar in every aspect and can also be interchanged between the saw. I never used my original Skil saw blade, from day 1 have been using Bosch expert wood blade in the Skil saw, It's a 60 teeth blade and gives a fine cut when compared to stock blade also the blade is thicker than the stock blade reducing vibration and bending of blade during the cut.
The Bosch expert blade has a 25.4mm bore while both Skil saw and Bosch saw accept 20mm bore blades. Bosch Expert Blade comes with 4 reducer washers so you can fit them in almost all saws. Bosch Expert Wood blade costed around 700Rs but its worth the investment.

Conclusion

Both the saws in my opinion are very good and you will not go wrong by buying any of them. But when you take the value into consideration then nothing beats the Skil 5301. You get more power and similar build quality with more features in the Skil 5301. Also Skil were the first to make the worm drive circular saw that's the reason circular saw is also called Skil saw.
Having said above you will end up owing a Bosch any way, as Skil is a part of Robert Bosch group but they are still maintain the SKIL tradename as it has a great brand value.
I will be starting on my table saw soon will keep you guys posted.

  1. Nice Writeup Apoorv. Following your blog. Looking forward to DIY...I am planning to buy skil saw. But, Black & Decker CS1500 was on my mind too (1500W). Can you please suggest me on that? How is the Black & Decker Quality? Have you ever had a chance to use it. I know you have B&D router..:-)

  2. Hi Subhan,
In my opinion both the skill and B&D saw are good that extra power will not give any benefit if you are planning to rip lot of plywood, But if you are planning to convert the saw into a table saw in future then go with B&D. Also invest in a good quality blade.

  3. Would be very happy if you could write an article comparing both Skil and Bosch with their 13mm power drill kits.

    1. i have a skill 13mm drill and it is pathetic the chuck wobbles on it. Apart from the circular saw there is nothing much in Skill portfolio worth the money. Go 4 a makita

    2. Hello Apoorv,

The reason for asking is that I purchased a Skil drill kit and a hand tool kit recently and all of their products (including replacements) have some issues which I haven't experienced earlier. I am not saying there are technical issues but definitely quality problems.

I bought them to cover most of my DIY needs at home so I need not postpone small repair works at anytime and rely on others.

I got both the products at discounted rates and a bit hesitated to get rid of them. I finally placed a return request and searching for a better product.

Budget is not a problem for me, but people talk less about Makita and curious to know if you have any experience with Bosch, Black & Decker and Dewalt. Since, you already wrote a detailed article comparing Saw I believe you are the right guy to help me with it.

      Thank you!

    3. skill is owned by Bosch and Dewalt is owned by B&D. I feel that Dewalt tools are overpriced and B&D does not have the same quality.
I would suggest Bosch or Makita if you want decent quality tools.
If you really have deep pockets then check the premium Fein tool range at amazon.in.

    4. Hello Apoorv,

Yes, I heard about these acquisitions. I am thinking about choosing one of these - Bosch 06019F30K2 GSB-1080 Li Cordless Drill (http://www.amazon.in/gp/product/B014RAA4EK/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=) or Bosch GSB 600 RE Smart Drill Kit - 13mm 600w (http://www.amazon.in/Bosch-GSB-600-Smart-Drill/dp/B00JEAYQ70#)

Normally, cordless drills seems to not support concrete surfaces, but this one makes upto 8 mm on concrete and 6 mm on metal. Looks like that fits for many of home needs where the conventional electric drill can make holes of 13mm diameter on concrete. Would you be so kind as to tell me what do you think of these?

Also, could you tell me why other cordless drills from Black & Decker and Dewalt with more voltage doesn't support concrete & metal surfaces when this Bosch's one with 10.8 volts can do it? Is the battery one a right choice than the conventional electric drill?

    5. I do not see how you can compare a cordless and corded tool. A cordless tool offers mobility it might not offer the best specs. But at 6k GSB-1080 looks like a good option (i am waiting price drop on brushless version GSR 10.8 V-EC will buy that in future).
I have a impact driver GDR-108 with similar power specs you can read more @
      http://www.dothediy.com/2015/09/bosch-gdr-108-review.html

GSB 600 has more power and a high impact rate which is needed for drilling in concrete.

In the end it depends on your use case. I have both a corded drill and a cordless impact driver which i use as drill. i prefer to use my cordless drill all the time. Only for tasks such as drilling pocket holes 10mm and concrete drilling i use the corded drill .But there are times when i use gdr-108 for drilling small holes 6mm to 7mm in concrete but you cave to be extremely careful as the impact action can shatter the bit easily.

If you think you will be working lot on concrete then buy a SDS hammer drill it will drill in concrete like butter.

All brands have powerful cordless hammer drills but unfortunately in Indian market only few models are available.

  5. Apoorv,

I found Black & Decker Rotary Hammer (http://www.amazon.in/Black-Decker-BPHR272KS-ROTARY-Warranty/dp/B00R4PRV9C#) with a discounted price on Tolexo. Will this be okay for DIY purposes to beginners like me?

    1. For diy needs buy any hammer drill from good brand.
The mentioned hammer drill by you is more of a professional tool and i doubt you will need this much power for your DIY need. It only has SDS Plus chuck you are not getting a adjustable chuck with it. SDS Plus bits are expensive.
I liked your original choice of Bosch drill machine.
